Default Summer Trip 2020

My wife and I are planning our summer trip in July. We have the rough outline. VA to Hill City, SD about 3 days (Badlands, Custer, Mt Rushmore etc), on to Cody Wy and Yellowstone (about 3 days as well) 2 in the park and 1 day riding Chief Joseph Pkway and Beartooth, then down to Estes Park, CO (3 days) for riding around the Mount Evans area and then down to CO Springs for 2 days for Pikes Peak etc and then back to VA. All together 13 days including travel time to get to and back to VA. Any advice?

Sounds about right.... when you ride from SD to Cody, go up 212 to the Crow agency and tour Little Big Horn Battlefield... then ride the slab down to Ranchester and take 14 to Burgess Junction and then 14a to Cody, if your not adverse to a bit of gravel road, at the top of the pass on 14a there is a short road that will take you up to a Medicine Wheel, I have not done it, but I hear it is a decent road..... a really good place to stay in Cody is A Western Rose... it is my go-to motel in Cody.... biker friendly and a real nice mom and pop, where you can park your bike right infront of your door usually.... but book early, it fills up fast in the summer.... dont be surprised to find a lot of bikes in the parking lot... Yellowstone is done quite nicley in two days, do the bottom half of the figure 8 one day, and the top half the next.

The Western Rose in Cody is awesome. Nice people. You park right outside your door. You can walk to town, if you'd like.

Chamberlain SD to Sturgis via 50, 34 & 14 was way better than the interstate.

Spearfish Canyon is a must, when in the Black Hills.

Beartooth from the entrance of Yellowstone to Red Lodge Montana is sweet. We made a full day of Chief Joseph and Beartooth.

Big Thompson Canyon, Poudre Canyon, Granby, RMNP are great rides when you are near Estes Park

You may not be able to ride to the top of Pikes Peak. I was there last summer and they made me park at like mile 16 and take the shuttle to the top. They are building a new visitor Center on top. Like a two year project. I had ridden to the top before.

Someone just posted in another thread that part of the northeast loop in Yellowstone will be closed the next few years for road construction. Keep that in mind with your Yellowstone/Beartooth/Chief Joseph plans.

Sounds like an awesome trip. Safe travels.

Depends on the year, but it can be.
We got snow on the 4th one of the years lived there.
It did not make it past 9 AM and warmed up by early afternoon.

6 days travel and 7 leisure. There’s a lot to see. I’m in Cincinnati area. 1200 miles from Denver. That’s two brutal days each way. If you’re wanting advice three weeks.

It’s best to be prepared for any kind of weather up in the mountains... heated vests and grips makes a big difference... Good rain gear is mandatory... I have seen it below freezing in mid summer when camping in Yellowstone... it’s 8,000ft plus up there... and the high plains and deserts of the West can be windy & cool... and the passes are high.

Beartooth July 24, 2018.....my wife was cold....lol.

It was spitting some snow as we went over the pass, and it rained on us as we went down in elevation. Proper gear is the key to a happy ride.
