Hwy 61 from Duluth to Thunder Bay is a nice ride. When you are heading out of Duluth, make sure to take the scenic route to Two Harbors, it pretty much hugs the lake all the way up. From Two Harbors to Thunder Bay it is all two lane, with the exception of a couple of passing lanes. During the summer, the trafficis fairly steady, so watch out for the cager tourists. Also keep aneye out for deer or an occasional moose. Plenty of gas stops and places eat or spend the night. BTW-I live in Two Harbors(hwy 61), if you have any questions let me know. Have great trip!

Ditto what mnbagger wrote. Awesome scenery and views, be sure to stop at Gooseberry Falls and hike the trail, Split Rock Lighthouse. Other points of interest are the Skyline Drive and the Aerial Lift Bridge (especially when an ore freighter passes within 20 feet of you) in Duluth and the harbor walk in Grand Marais. No problem with fuel stops until you get past Thunder Bay then they start to spread out. Take a lot of pictures and enjoy your trip.
