I first got a motorcycle in 2014 (shortly after I moved from the UK to the US) and in September 2014 I rode from San Jose, CA, to Yosemite up to Lake Tahoe and back down to SJ...took 4 days and I loved it. Things got in the way of doing it again, but recently bought a new bike and decided a trip was in order.
So heading from SJ down to see friends in Temecula and back up again. No day is more than 240 miles so that I have some time to explore places when I arrive at the various campsites. I'm pretty excited!!
Point "C" (Kern River Valley) is an excellent choice.
In the Temecula area, I would ride the Ortega Hwy up and down.
There are also beautyful roads around Palomar Mountain.
Your map shows the way on Ventura Fwy and Foothill Fwy through LA Metro area. Why not keep a little bit further north (?) and ride on the Angeles Crest Hwy in the Angeles National Forest to Lake Arrowhead.
I could rave about these roads for hours.....
Looks like your taking 46 from Bakersfield to the coast (I have never been on it)... but you might want to look at 58... its a hell of a nice twisty motorcycle road. I did it several years ago... there are a couple of pictures here...
thanks for everyone's advice! I'm new to road tripping, this is only my second attempt. I plugged destinations into google to get a 'rough' guide. I have a proper paper road map so will be looking at it to decide the actual route, and my plan is to wake up each morning with a destination to get to, and then work out how to get there.
