Thoughts?
I dropped a pump jack off at Bakersfield once and ran up to Lodi to pick up a load of walnut shells… And ran up 99… I distinctly remember it not being a very nice piece of road.

395 Sierras and 101 Coast are the only highways I will take north. Usually Up one. Down the other.

We did a road trip to Tahoe a couple of years back and went down over Lassen and then back 395 to Susanville. That stretch of 395 is really cruisy, not much traffic with decent scenery, but the I would highly recommend the detour over Lassen.

You also go over Donner Pass between North Lake Tahoe and Truckee.

If you are up for some slight detours off 395, look up the Bristlecone Pine forest near Big Pine. https://www.google.com/search?q=Bris...hrome&ie=UTF-8 There you will fine the oldest living organism in the world, estimated to be about 4,000 years old. Monitor Pass on Route 89 off 395 is not to be missed. https://www.google.com/search?q=Moni...hrome&ie=UTF-8 Utterly spectacular views from there. There is also a nice ranger tour of Mono Lake. And if you are traveling in July, forget about Death Valley. Much too hot and thus dangerous.

The 395 is desert until you get past Ridgecrest, then it is scenic. The 99 and 5 North suck, with lots of Trucks. So yes to 395, or go up the coast (bad in a car, good on a bike!)

Good info on 395 from the group. The only thing I will add is don't blink as you ride past Toms Place!

During late July, you'll likely encounter lots of RV's and truck traffic on 395. The desert floor during that time of year can be BRUTAL, heat wise. Traveling at night thru DV won't give much relief, as it'll still be over 100F.
www.madmaps.com has some good motorcyclist suggestions.

We took a ride to Tahoe a few years ago too. We took 395 to 89 and 89 was fun (twisty) and beautiful. Best part of the ride. A side trip on 190 to Panamint Springs is worth the views.
