I'm a bit curious about the "9mm and 4 17 round magazines". I am guessing that you are lots of trouble makers on your trip to need so much ammo.
Since you pointed at the elephant in the room , OP have you checked the various states to see what the carry laws are ? And 4 extra is dead weight, you can't do it with what's in it your fuqed anyway.

I don't look for trouble but I like to be prepared should it find me

I have checked and other than California I'm good to ride & carry just as I am here in Texas, once I get to the state line I'll follow the ridiculousness that is California gun laws.
I think y'all are right. I'm only taking one mag with me, first solo trip so I'm probably overthinking a lot of things.
Really looking forward to this trip, it's been a long 7 months working from home & I need a break. Got a ride along CA 1 from San Luis Obispo to Big Sur planned while I'm there as well

That's a nice ride, done it many times. Used to pop down to San Lois to play with the college girls on long weekends, Nice big tavern downtown called Harry's, good stop for a cold one and a burger if it's still there.
One last thing, this time of year anything over 4000' in elevation is going to get cold so plan accordingly, below freezing is possible in a few spots on the routes.

I grew up in the central valley, SLO was always good for skirt chasing. I don't have winter gear (yet) but I do have Carhartt overalls with the black lining as well as a matching coat. Here's to hoping I don't need them. Have you ever ridden Nacimiento-Ferguson Road between Jolon & HWY 1? I've been that way a bunch but never on a bike

Can't say I have, seen it on the map but never tried it. Little trick I used back in my young days before I got good gear when it got cold out unexpectedly was put the rain gear on to break the wind, stayed a lot warmer that way.
I cant tell for sure the exact route youre taking. If you can work in 89A near Prescott, you wont be disappointed. Itd be a shame to be that close to it and miss that ride.

that's extremely close, looks like I've got some map editing to do. Thank you for the tip
