Default Georgia Routes...

Hey guys, in the process of planning a May trip. Pretty much the same that got rained out recently. But will leave Asheville, NC and make my way thru Georgia. Only route I know is thru Chattahoochee forest to Suches, Ga. Then will head back to Texas.
If you know of any good roads along this route I'd appreciate your input.
Thanks!
Current route:
- Tx-Broken Bow, OK-Hot Springs, AR-Searcy, AR
- Thayer, MO-Wappapello. MO-Cape Girardeau-Brookport, IL-Cavert City, KY
- Sturgis, KY-Monticello (192)-London, KY
- (587) Gauley Bridge, WV-Fayetteville-Beckley, WV
- BRP-Little Sw- Asheville, NC
- Franklin, NC-Suches, GA....... heading home.

If it were me I’d stay off the freeway, and stay north/west of Dahlonega, Canton, Acworth, and Dallas that will keep you on the outer edge of the suburbs in in the more mountainous areas with better scenery. Dawsonville has a small NASCAR museum that’s where Bill Elliot is from, not sure if they’re open or not. Lots of great roads in north GA but Suches/Blood mountain and the surrounding area is where a lot of locals go for the best mountain roads. Safe travels

While the roads in theN Ga Mountian s are extremely nice I’ve burnt out on them over the years. Been traveling backroads out of the Athens area. Very rarely take the same road for the last 3-4 years. Usually end up in S Carolina sometimes N Carolina. Not really the mountains but great roads and pretty much zero traffic. I like the small towns. You really have to blow up Maps or Waze to even see the names of roads. I don’t really have any specific routes usually we just look at how many miles and hours we have on any given day we ride.

Not sure where your entry point is into GA and where you want your exit point to be, but..... if you are looking to ride some good roads, take a look at this known as the 'Gauntlet'

http://www.openroadjourney.com/rides...gauntlet/16978

I dont think the upper left (or northwest) part of the route is very good, but other parts are pretty good.

In my 2 cents opinion, here are the better parts:

1. Rt 19/129 heading north (or south as it it worth doing in both directions) from Turners Corner to Vogel State Park (by Rt 180 intersection) - pic below. Stop in at the App. Trail crossing store/stop at the top of Blood Mtn
2. Rt 60 from Dahlonega to Morgantown (goes thru Suches) - both directions equally good
3. Richard B Russell Scenic Highway Rt 348
4. Rt 180 is OK from Vogel State Park to Suches - not particularly scenic, but lots of curves - 2 places to be careful - sharp curve by lake if you are not paying attention, and one pretty tight hairpin turn. Last time went thru there someone ran off the road at the hairpin and ended about 30+ ft down the hill - ruined their day

Rt 197 that goes by Lake Burton was ok if I remember correctly, but it has been about 10 yrs since I went over there. Lot of other side roads pretty good, but you could be there for several days exploring them.

Really are a ton of fun. Rt 19/129 is usually light on LEO, but I have seen them there, so it is good to do it twice - once to get familiar and once to be more aggressive (if you want). There are some decreasing radius curves, so they can sneak up on you very quickly and give the instant pucker factor. Was on a HOG ride and one of the riders couldnt negotiate the curve given his speed, crossed the yellow line and ran into the side of camper hauled by a pickup going the opposite direction - he was lucky with only minor injuries.

Also, depending on how you ride, good chance you would scrape floor boards - still surprises the heck out of me even though I expect it in that area

Hope you enjoy the roads and have great weather when coming thru

Just checked the Ride Planner routes (Day 6) coming from Asheville, NC down Franklin, NC thru Vogel ST PK to Suches ending at Decatur for the day. But really just meandering thru GA as I haven't been thru it before. I'll change to 19/129 and up to Morgantown.
Thanks Man!
