It’s a great ride, we do the Virginia end of it maybe 10 times a year. The entrance is about 15 min away.
Like someone said , all the look outs are about the same. Watch out for Wilde life. Many times you come around a corner to see Bear and babies in the road.
And if you do it on the weekends then the cagers can make it dicey.
I have ridden it many times, I am local though. At 35 MPH and with all the cars that will double park on the sides of the roads and lookouts and not watch what they are doing you spend more time watching your six then gawking at the beauty! I would do the southern part south of Luray caverns down into the Carolinas into Little Switzerland. You also have a slew of other great rides right of the Parkway worth doing.
So right now the plan is to leave Cherokee Thursday morning do about 220mi of it then the rest to Virginia Friday. Saturday from Virginia to Hazard KY. Sunday heading home to middle TN.
The last time the wife and I did the SLD the weather "took a turn for the worse" and due to wind, rain, fog, loose gravel and wildlife. it took us 5-1/2 hours to get from Front Royal, VA down to Waynesboro, VA and the balance of the day to reach Gastonia, NC that evening.
As I remember, the toll on the SLD was waived one day per year but that was several years ago.
At one time, we liked to stay overnight in "The Bluffs" motel but I think it may still be closed so do a check on all of the facilities before your pan your travels.
