We're staying in Lexington so we'll start by running straight across I-64 to Louisville to start the day. If we get over there early enough we've got a few sites picked out to see.
Our Evans Williams tour is early enough to allow us to grab lunch before heading over to Maker's Mark. Based on the time we have we may grab a few country roads along the way over to Maker's.
Yes, the Maker's Mark Distillery tour is a good one. I'll usually stop for one of the distillery tour's on my way to HogRock. Looks like I'll be doing a tour next week!
I live in GA and have been to "the Dragon" several times. It's a bucket list item but more hype than fun. The best riding you'll have is getting there. Maggie Valley and Wheels Through Time is a must if you're out there. Sad that the owner Dale died but assuming his son took over.
Bourbon Trail, now you're talking! Went 3 years ago and had a lot of fun. Buffalo Trace and Four Roses were good tours. After a while we skipped the tours and walked around a few and did tastings. The most fun we had was at Willet. Besides the great bourbon that they have, the people that ran the tasting room made it fun and great people to talk to.
Dale's son Matt was indeed at WTT starting bikes and talking to visitors. I had an opportunity to talk with him for about 5 minutes as they were closing up the place for the night. Passed along my condolences to him directly.
I still believe the Dragon is a great time, we happened to be there on Friday so the crowds where minimal, I was able to blast through at my speed, never saw another bike in my direction. Had a lot of rain in the area the past couple of days. If your venturing any back roads just be on the look out for any wash off from driveways and such. Enjoy!
Ran the entire ride to Lexington (11 hours / almost 700 miles) with no stops save for gas-ups, with the exception of 20 minutes in Charleston, WV, where I met up with my riding partner. Bike is running phenomenally well and the weather got better and better with every mile.
i absolutely LOVE I-64 / I-79 through northern Maryland in down through West Virginia. Beautiful mountain riding at a spirited pace (75~85mph). Never any real traffic to speak of, though there where a few construction zones. Sweeping turns and variations in elevation keep it interesting. A joy to ride.
We hit Proud Mary BBQ for dinner and a few beers before visiting with my Dad for a bit. Tomorrow is all about the Bourbon Trail...
Have fun and enjoy your time here in Ky. I'm a couple of miles from Wild Turkey and Four Roses. They are great places to visit. Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve are about 15 minutes from me. Love all the riding and different things to do around here, and if it gets old, we're only a 3 hour trip to the Dragon ,Deals Gap, and all that area has to offer. Be safe and enjoy your visit with you dad.
