I am riding cross country to my brothers wedding next week in Rochester NY and then down the Blue Ridge Parkway. Does anyone have a map loadable for my nav with interesting waypoints that I can use? I am having a hell of a time getting any of the mapping software to plot this part of my trip. I will be starting from the north and plan on a few days getting lost in that area and am looking for something to just give me references to nice places to visit without micro managing the ride to much.
Check the NPS website.
You can download maps to get you started and when you get to the main get they have (free) detailed maps.
I was looking more for GPS navigation maps that will work with the bike that people have made themselves. I have plenty of paper and computer maps of the parkway. Just thought I would see if anyone had navs that they have used to wander thru the mountains. Of there are down loadable navs for gps systems I have not found them on their sites.
I tried that the first time we went down the BRP... It is really hard to get the GPS to stay on the Parkway. Plus you really don't need it. 400+ miles with no stop signs, stop lights, etc. Very easy to navigate.
IMHO the spectacular stuff begins at Boone, NC and south.
Places of interest on or just off the parkway:
1. Mabry Mill
2. Boone NC area (Blowing Rock is cool)
3. Grandfather Mountain - very cool
4. Mt Mitchell (highest point east of the rockies)
5. Asheville, NC
Once at the bottom of the BRP (Cherokee NC), you're a short ride to
1. Clingman's dome
2. Tail of the Dragon
3. Wheels through Time (bike museum)

You know that you are pretty much wandering through the mountains on the BRP--granted it's one continuous road, but you do have to leave the parkway to get fuel--that would be your wandering. In Little Switzerland area take 226a for a nice adventure, then back on to the Parkway--most of what was said about Boone and Blowing Rock is a big yes in my book--make that ride also
