Default Pikes Peak

We are planning to go to Colorado Springs/Canon City this summer for whitewater rafting and horseback riding. The wife and kids will drive the car and I of course will ride the bike. I am thinking since I will be there why not ride the bike to Pikes Peak? I have a fear of heights but I did not have any issues when I drove there in the past. My only concern is the sections without road barriers, looks scary but I think I can handle that.

Please share your experience?

It's as easy as staying on the black top....just like any other road. Look where you're going and go where you look. Pull over if you want to take in sights. Hit it early. We did it in July of 2016 at 8:30am. No traffic, up or down. Loved it. Mt. Evans is scarier, and well worth the visit, also early in the morning.

Like was just mentioned. It has been paved all the way up now... new visitor center on top. You can even take the new cog train.

Now Mt. Evans is a whole different animal. No rails, goats walking around and they do own the road!

Was going to stop there last year on the way back from sturgis. You have to have a reservation at the top if you want to stop. I'd check their website out now if you want to go there. Needless to say we didn't go out of our way to go there

Sadly everything here is getting that way... You can't go anywhere here without the crowds and or having to have a reservation. Just sad.

Yeah was pretty disappointing to read. Was booked out for weeks and they even said on their site that you can't even stop at the top due to limited space. Plus everyone in the group needed a reservation.

I was floored when I had to book a time to take my mom up to RMNP while she was here for Thanksgiving in 2021. The parking area on top of Mt. Evans is pretty small, real pain in the *** if you're with a group of bikes, you're fodder for vehicles trying to back out!

Rode up it last Sept. Had to have a timed entry permit but it was only $2 and I did it online. The weather was great, no wind and about 40 degrees. I had ridden it years ago before it was paved the entire way. It's a nice road and the new visitor center is nice. You really notice the lack of oxygen up there! Drink plenty of water.

We did it in the summer of 2019, last stop on a 10 day road trip, before heading home. 90F at the gate at the bottom, mid 30's at the top, and the guy at the gate said "let me check if its snowing up there" before we started up... I thought he was joking! But it was a cool ride up, and I will admit it was a little weird with everything leaning right and no guard rail and the drop off to the right... then the people in cars going so slooooow on the way up... specially in switch backs. Stop and go. But it was a cool ride to do once... coming down was so much more enjoyable, no traffic at all to the halfway point (where they were checking peoples brake temperature).
