Default Alaska

Based on a 2016 Alaska tourism report, not many people ride or drive to Alaska.
55% of the people that went to Alaska went on a cruise ship.
40% went by air.
4% went by highway.
1% went by ferry.
Of the group that went by highway, 3% was traveling on a motorcycle. So, 3 out of 100 that traveled to Alaska by highway was on a motorcycle.
The far north stats -
Only 1% of all travelers to Alaska went to the far north for vacation/pleasure.
Of the group that went to the far north only 15% went by highway. 15% of 1%. How many on a motorcycle? ?
If you have ridden to northern Alaska, you are on a short list.

I live on the East Coast, no friggin way I was riding the scoot
I flew
Climbed to the top of the far peak, set the camera down on auto timer
Crawled to the far side & stood up for the pic
Took a pic of the parking lot, others followed me to the 1st peak, nobody went to the 2nd with me

And Of the 1% that went by motorcycle… 60 to 80 % of them are on adventure tour bikes… If you want to be one of the very few to travel by road to Alaska, go on a Harley… when I rode up there in ‘017 I only saw a few Harley touring motorcycles…

…And if you wonder why, it’s because of construction and the general shape of the road… The piece between destruction bay in the Yukon and Tok Alaska is best described as a 250 mile blacktop bitch slap… and if you ride both ways that’s 500 miles of 50 mph road at best. Any faster and you’ll beat the **** out of your motorcycle & yourself.

I ran into a guy from NY on a Evo with 120 or 150k miles on it. I hope to go to Newfound land and Nova Scotia someday, I will ride,

The ride there is a big part of the experience in my opinion. Riding up through mountains. Once you get there it is easy like riding through extreme Montana with the mountains in the distance.

No doubt riding up there sets you apart from the guys who flew. A dual sport might be nice up there. But you got thousands of miles of pavement to ride to get there. Lots of gravel onthe way, but still I would take my touring bike with OL on bike. Getting to the Arctic Circle on touring bike was bad where it was wet, but fine otherwise. If they sprayed for dust near a helo pad it is wicked nasty for a few hours, but drys up. If rain passes through it gets bad to. But gravel they use when dry in nice,

Obviously you can't control weather, or even time it, in such a huge place. Haul road when wet has not fun, the Alaska Highway when wet, wasn't as bad. Hard packed, like traffic bond.

The frost heaves, may have been the worse of it., even in late June, early July, they were big.

I just happen to have my destruction bay shirt on. It wasn't that bad when i went. No area of Alaska Highway was more than a few miles of gravel. Then even shortened it a little since I went 13 years ago. Haul road was mostly gravel. But I did not experience 250 mile total gravel on the entrie AK highway,

…the 250 miles was paved… I was talking about the condition of the road frost heave and pothole wise… except for the dust and loose ridding on the fresh seal coating, it was fairly smooth… but there where several 20 mile sections of it.

Ya that is how I remeber. Which again, it think I would go with touring bike. 9k miles trip, with lots of asphalt. I would probably choose to comfortable 99% of the time.

I did not go top of the world on my Ultra. Artic cirle was a bit much two up. But if you are staying on highways, I would take a touring.

The Alaska highway bit was part of a 13,000 mile, 10 week adventure… And I certainly liked the Electraglide for the rest of the ride… As far as the rough road parts, all you have to do is slow down a bit…

I never went any further north than Fairbanks… It was supposed to start raining the very next day… And that rain chased me all the way to Ontario…
