If you have ridden to northern Alaska, you are on a short list.
I flew
Climbed to the top of the far peak, set the camera down on auto timer
Crawled to the far side & stood up for the pic
Took a pic of the parking lot, others followed me to the 1st peak, nobody went to the 2nd with me
And if you wonder why, its because of construction and the general shape of the road The piece between destruction bay in the Yukon and Tok Alaska is best described as a 250 mile blacktop bitch slap and if you ride both ways thats 500 miles of 50 mph road at best. Any faster and youll beat the **** out of your motorcycle & yourself.
The ride there is a big part of the experience in my opinion. Riding up through mountains. Once you get there it is easy like riding through extreme Montana with the mountains in the distance.
No doubt riding up there sets you apart from the guys who flew. A dual sport might be nice up there. But you got thousands of miles of pavement to ride to get there. Lots of gravel onthe way, but still I would take my touring bike with OL on bike. Getting to the Arctic Circle on touring bike was bad where it was wet, but fine otherwise. If they sprayed for dust near a helo pad it is wicked nasty for a few hours, but drys up. If rain passes through it gets bad to. But gravel they use when dry in nice,
Obviously you can't control weather, or even time it, in such a huge place. Haul road when wet has not fun, the Alaska Highway when wet, wasn't as bad. Hard packed, like traffic bond.
The frost heaves, may have been the worse of it., even in late June, early July, they were big.
