Looking for some experienced people who have ridden the Bourbon Trail in the last few years. (all Bourbon Trail threads are at least 5 years old)
Five of us are riding to the Bourbon Trail in the first week in August from North Dakota and looking for some advice. Total trip will be 9 days.
Since it is going to take us three days to get to Louisville and another three days back we are going to spend about three total days on the trail. Our thoughts are maybe visiting three or four distilleries during these three days. Our thoughts are after 3 or 4 they get too similar. What are the top distilleries to visit and what else should we see?
Planning on spending two nights in Bardstown unless someone can talk us out of it.
Also looking for good stops in Illinois and Indiana on the way there and back. (Psycho Saloon in Illinois planned for a visit)
Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.

Thank you for the responses so far. This is the second and third time I've heard about Buffalo Trace having one of the best tours. Since it's located in Frankfort, we might hit that up and then work clockwards down to Maker's Mark before heading to Bardstown.
May look into booking a tour of Buffalo Trace. Hate to be committed to a time and date though.
We live here and have been to the majority of the distilleries. Buffalo Trace should have the best in depth tours if you can book one. From Frankfort, you are only 12 miles or so to Lawrenceburg (where we live) which has Wild Turkey and Four Roses. They're only 5 miles apart, and Woodford Reserve is probably another 10 miles away. Then it's a quick hop on the Bluegrass Parkway or Hwy 62 to Bardstown (32 miles). Makers Mark is really nice as well.
As for food, if you're staying in Bardstown, we tend to gravitate towards Bardstown Burger, Mammies Restaurant, Talbott Inn and Tavern. All walkable along main street in Bardstown.
I'd recommend a stop at Woodford. It's on the National Historic Landmark registry. It's beautiful old distillery that still has some open top wooden vats that they ferment in. The smell in that place makes your mouth water.
Just wanted to say a thanks to all for the suggestions. Checked Buffalo Trace daily for new tour dates and snagged a tour for 6.
Still eyeing 4 Roses, Bulleit, Maker's Mark Woodford, Wild Turkey and Angel's Envy for a couple of more tours. Thinking 3-4 distilleries will be enough.
Plan on staying a couple of nights in Bardstown. Looking for suggestions on a hotel/motel with an outdoor pool. Sipping bourbon near water is warranted in August in Kentucky.
