If a person were to be in Boston in October and wanted to rent and work in a good full day trip (away fromBoston or any large metro area) any route suggestions from those who are familiar with the area? Something that could start out, say within 90 miles of Boston?
There are many awesome rides out in the western part of Massachusetts, southern Vermont and New Hampshire. I agree on "The Kank" One of the very best rides in all of New England! In fact, most anywhere up in the White Mts is pretty spectacular...........but if you want to keep yourself within about 90 miles or so of the Beanpot, give a thought to running out here in the western part of the state.
No easy way/road out of Bean Town. I live in Concord NH and avoid it like a plague.
You can rent a Bike from A NH dealer. Concord is only 1and a half hrs north. From there the riding in all directions is great.
A good ride fairly close to Bean Town is a loop around the Quabbin Reservoir. Take Rte 202 to Athol. Stay on 202 through New Salem to Belchertown to Rte 181, Rte 20 east to Rte 32 North to Ware, to Rte 9 West to Rte 32A to Rte 122 back to Rte 202. There's a tower with a good view in Bondsville on Rte 181.
Another bigger loop with a lot of twisties is Rte 2 (Mohawk Trail) from Greenfield to North Adams, Rte 8 north to VT, Rte 9 East to Brattleboro, VT and back to I-91.

The wife and I both love that loop out the Mohawk Trail (we live on the trail in Shelburne) the only alternate I would suggest is Rt 7 up into Bennington instead of rt 8. The run across rt 9 is just awesome! Especially going up over Hogback! Wow! Great run!

Thanks!!
Route 3 through NH has some nice areas. Rt 202 through NH into Maine is very nice. The Kangamangus in the White Mountains is awesome.
MANY great roads in New England. If you had more time/miles, Rt 100 in VT is great!
