I rode the full distance in '89, and '91. I trailered out in '90 and '96 and I (we) retuned from western states back through the Sturgis Rally and surrounding areas in '00, '07 and '10.
Doubtful that I'll get out that way again but a day or so of drinking and people watching is about my limit but the riding and scenery can keep me busy for a couple of weeks.
I have learned that good rain gear (and a tent if you camp) is a darned good idea! Also a good tent with good tent stakes, a waterproof ground sheet to go under your tent can help make a huge difference if the weather turns bad.
Keeping some extra clothes in waterproof bag in your tent might also be a good idea....just in case
I don't but have been known to be seen on occasion at The Silver Dollar, the Black Hills best dive bar.
2003, leaving Mt Rushmore, we get caught in some serious hail. Younger days, I am on my Wide Glide wearing a t shirt, no additional gear with me at all, wife on the back. About 12 bikes pull over to the side of the road, I assume 385 and go dash into the woods, hail sucks. After about 2 minutes the Police show up and tell us we cannot stay in the woods, "it is not safe"!!!!! Oh but riding in hail is OK?!?!?!? Anyway they tell us there is a bar up the road a piece, we make a dash, still pouring. We find the bar and pull into the mud parking lot, my buddy was coming in hot and locked the brakes and almost went through the front door of the place. Literally people on the front porch scattered, looked like he was going for it. Anyway, we go inside for a beverage, immediately the rain stops and sun comes out. Pretty sure it was the Silver Dollar.
LOL, It's an entertaining place, John and Howie are always cooking up interesting events for our viewing pleasure. They recently had a "Dive Bar Beauty Queen Contest". contestants had to compete for the title with a number of competitions like shooting paint ball targets, drinking shots, I think they had to wrangle some kind of critter. They're always up to something over there.

I'll have to check this place out, since we're staying in Hill City. We'll be there the 13th.
Oh, and the wait staff issues...With so many people NOT wanting to even work now days... I usually tip generously to those who show up. It's not their fault the others didn't come to work.
It's been a few trips to the Black Hills since we stopped in. Probably the last time we went to Crazy Horse.
We'll have to try and stop in this year.
As a RailFan we're gonna do the steam train ride this year in Hell City.
We Call Hill City 'Hell City' because it always seems to rain when we go through there.
Was there last year and remember the barmaid had the cutest little puppy. Bernese mt. dog I think. The barmaid was pretty cute too! And don't try to use a credit card either.
