I would not go anywhere that I cannot carry a gun for protection. Mexico is not civilized.
This is just my opinion.
If you speak fluent Spanish and are one-mean-son-of-a-bitch, then go for it.
I went on vacation to Mexico. Know I have done it, checked off list. it is a third world country. Go to Texas, atleast you can carry a gun there.
Go read up on ADV. It was a hottly debated topic. Some guys saying beutiful country, just bribe the cops, and ignore the drugs dealers with machine gun. When I wen tthere people that had been there before telling stores of getting shaken down by cops. every one is trying to rip you off on the price. I hate all the negiating. I went to tourist town, so worse in some ways, but safer in others
Can't flush toilet paper or drink the water. Once was enough for me.
Like DK said, check out Scooter Tramp Scotty videos on YouTube. He doesn't seem to have an issue. I have a few friends from Mexico. One of them owns avocado ranch and drives down twice a year. But he's from there, so there is that. Lots of nice areas in the interior of Mexico but getting to them via road can be a challenge as you have probably to go through bad areas. (from friend that drives down) I would stick to South of the Border on the NC/SC line to be safe.
I've ridden and stayed in Baja twice, last year and five years ago and had good trips with no problems. That being said, there were LOTS of us. I don't think I'd do it by myself or with a small group, but I do know people who've done it with no problems.
I've been riding motorcycles down in Mexico since the 1970's, and never had a problem until a few years ago.
Things have changed quite a bit south of the border. We do not have any plans to ride in Mexico again anytime soon.
That said, Scooter Tramp Scotty still heads down there every winter.
I have several friends in SoCal that used to go on golf trips to Mexico several times every year. It was cheap and the resorts we stayed (their timeshares) were nice. The staff was great! It was a 90 minute drive from Tijuana.
All was grand, until 2014. My friends were kidnapped. Ransom was paid. They were released. Their vehicles and anything nice was gone. Staff at the resort was too scared to assist. My friends no long go back. Had I been there, I would have died because I do not have cash ransom money!
