At dinner we met 2 different couples. One of them had arrived on a new Ultra Limited. The other couple were ex-riders who stopped due to being new parents. We shared a bunch of laughs and enjoyed some incredible food.
I ordered the Lox Eggs Benedict which were very flavorful and definitely filling. Incidentally, all overnight guests get half off the menu price. Nice perk!
After breakfast and some more time spent with new friends we packed up and rolled. First stop was Monterey, VA for fuel. From there we headed west over a mountain which looms above Germany Valley in WV.
From there we ran US 33 west through extremely beautiful rural mountain valleys to Seneca Rocks. This was a true touchstone for us, as we visited there 40 years ago and have climbed the difficult trail to the summit.
The intersection above is in Elkins. We were taking a break when a beautiful UL with 2 riders rolled past. I thought I recognized the bike and riders as a great couple we had dinner and breakfast with. Almost 3 hours of riding different roads and we arrived at the same place within a minute of each other. They didn’t see us as they headed to their home.
645 miles of WV and VA roads. Areas where the trees and mountains looked like it was mid October. We couldn’t have asked for a better quick getaway.
Several years ago we were driving through WV in mid-October. On a lark we decided to take the Highland Scenic Highway. The weather turned nasty and we were the first tracks in 4+ inches of fresh snowfall. Quite a memory.
Thanks for following. I hope everyone enjoys the great weather and roads ahead!
That’s my kind of ride. It’s all about the ride, with a spouse that also enjoys it. The scenery, weather, food and people you meet along the way make it even more special.
Hey Mr. Trekker! Sounds like a great weekend. I'll look at Highland Scenic Highway, German Valley, and Warm Springs for my next weekend ride. I'm always looking for a new/different scenic twisty ride. One of my favorites is 33 from Harrisonburg VA to Seneca Rocks. I love WV. I go down there a few times every summer from upstate PA. My next trip is for Bridge Day on 10/19. I had hip arthritis a few years ago, and ended up giving up the bike. Arthritis made it so uncomfortable I wasn't having fun anymore. It never bothered me in the car, and my wife said "Why don't you just get a little sports car?" Not a bad idea at all. I now have a Miata convertible, and having a blast on those WV roads. Thanks for the info on a few new rides & destinations!
I was going to ride up last year from central NC and stay in a little motel in Warm Springs called Roseloe motel. Just my kind of place with the bike parked out front of the room, then was going to ride north to Monterey VA, and all points in between. Geenbank, etc...
Didnt make it. I need to do it this fall.
We considered the Roseloe Motel but wanted more than a basic room for the night. Nothing wrong with that place at all though. We've been all over that region many times and it's about as gorgeous as mountain valleys and rural farms ever get. Monterey, VA is set in an idyllic valley surrounded by tall mountains. Riding through there on US 220 (basically north-south) is a visual treat. Traveling east-west on US 250 will have you rolling through multiple mountains with all the usual curves and switchbacks. Monterey is one of the few small towns you can ride from in 4 directions with every one a winner. If you like local fare be sure to hit High's Diner in town. It's small....old....and loved by the locals.
Green Bank and the Observatory are a worthy destination. If you go there, consider riding WV 6 through the valley to Cass, and then past Snowshoe over to US 219. From there you could turn south and go find the Highland Scenic Highway.
Sorry.....this is what happens when you like a state or region well enough to explore it constantly. 😄
