The wife and I were talking the other night about where we wanted to ride during the coming year and the thought crossed our minds about fuel stops. Is there a way to map out where current fuel stations are across the country? Im thinking there must be a way to search for all currently "open for buisiness" gas stations and thier locations in a given state to help with trip planning??
Any help on this matter would be very much appreciated.
Never seen any listing like. And if I did, not sure I would trust it.
If you're east of the rockies, it's not really a problem. Just about the time your butts are tired, there's a station. West of I-25 to central CA it takes a little planning. It's easy to run out of fuel if you're not carefull. Never pass a station if you only have half a tank.
I am mostly concerned about (for now) the stretch between Wendover NV. (utah/nevada state line on I-80) and Reno. I have only been on that piece of road a few times and cant say I could say for certain there are enough gas stations to make it by bike. We have a trip in Aug. that will take us to Grass Valley Ca. and are wondering if we should cut up thru Nevada out of Vegas or go up to Salt Lake City and cut across. Might also head to Auburn Ca. in June but thats still only a maybe.
That's a long stretch, about 400 miles. But according to my map there's plenty of stops available between Wendover and Winnemucca. But that last stretch could get a little scarce, with the first stop I see in Fernley, about 130 miles.
I wouldn't worry about it. If it really bugs you, get a couple of bottle from the camp store and carry an extra gallon of fuel.
Wolfx: Lots of gas stops on that route. Anyplace there is an intersection with the freeway by a state highway and/or a US highway there will be at least one gas station. The longest stretch is between Winnemucca and Lovelock and I think that is under 120 miles. Just last summer I took my wife and mother-in-law for what I called "One Lap Around the West". We left LV and went to Bryce Canyon, UT. Then to Salt Lake, then to Wendover, then to Reno via that exact road. Never a problem with gasoline, but we were in a Chevy (Cowboy Cadillac) pickup. We took many side trips to see various things. We then took US 395 back south and then thru Death Valley back home to LV. ........ BC
I use a software program called MS Streets & Trips for planning the routes for all my long distance trips. It does everything including a web update on construction projects on the roads. It lists places to stay(with contact # & addresses for making reservations) to eat, visit, and gas stations along or near your route. It does hour by hour miles to help keep you on schedule (if you need a schedule). You can schedule all your stops incuding gas and rest -- It will even print "turn by turn" maps. it does take some time to learn all its features. It's never let me down and does much, much more than Mapquest.
For me, it's an invaluable tool for good trip plannig (caged or saddled).
Let me tell you about a web site that I have used to plan our trips. The site is call google earth.com, the power of satellite from your computer. You can set it up to show you gas stations, restaurants, streets, highway and more, Check it out.
