I live on Sugarloaf... 17.5 mile marker. Everyone had great suggestions and recommendations. Try to plan hitting the Seven Mile Bridge at sunset. Fact is the ride is awesome anytime. Just don't miss it in the dark. FYI: Hornes, the local HD shop closed last year... bring it if you think you'll need it!
Have a great ride.
I'd second the stay in Key Largo or even points farther north. The wife and I went to KW a few years back and made it aday trip from Miami (Cutler Ridge area). We got into town just as a cruise ship pulled in and the streets immediately filled with yellow-shirted, obliviouspedestrians on rented bicycles. We couldn't get out of there fast enough!!
Also, keep in mind that FL has a 17% room tax, so your $200 rate is $234 when you pay your bill.
I stayed at the southern most point inn last time i was down there and really liked it. It's down by the bouy. Funny to see the owners old man rides. It's a nice old house and the rooms were comfortable and they have a nice parking area. Going back soon and will stay there again.
I found that place on the internet and it looks pretty nice and not too expensive. Is this it? http://southernmostpoint.com/

Are the miles of bridges that go out there the awful open-grate type or solid? Got a buddy who wants to take a trip out there this summer and he was asking me that today. It would make for a loooong ride if it's open-grate.
Just thought i'd add my 2 cents worth. Key west is an awesome party town, great laid back attitude. Very expensive to stay though. Even the campground there is like 60 bucks a nite. However, there is one other cheap alternative. There is a little known place called the sea shell motel. It is located down the end of duval near the bouy. It is actually attached to the key west youth hostel. It is NOT fancy, but if you are looking for a place to rest your head and a hot shower it might be worth your while. I"ve stayed there before and had no problems. Under a hundred a night. Again not fancy at all but you could look into it and see if its what you can live with. Its walking distance to most bars and there are young people who have those bikes with the carts attached to transport 2 people up and down duval street for a few bucks. (they often times know the best places for deals on food, drinks etc.)
