Planning a trip from Indianapolis to US 66 in Illinoise and going as far west as we can make it and back in a week. Anybody done any or all of Route 66? Needing some points of interest and good places to stop and stay. What you got for me??
Chuck,We are doing 66 in June starting at the begining in Joliet.Ill and heading out to SO-CAL and up the coast and over the Rockies and into Montana,Dakotas and the Great River Road south and back east to Illinois on 80.........When are you going? We want to make the round trip in 3 weeks...
I'm glad to hear about interest in the Mother Road. I have done the strip 4 times and it is better each time. I think I have ridden 99% of the route with very, very little of slab riding. It is a heritage ride. The Mother Road Rally starts June 13 from Willowbrook, Chicago on Saturday and rolls into Santa Monica, CA the next Saturday. Then take a week, or more, to get home. There are maps and literature that cover the route. Just stay off of the freeway.
The start (or end whichever way you look at it) was closer when I was near Detroit. Now just an opportunity for a longer trip from Memphis. I don't think I will get to do it in the near future, but definitely on my list of "must-do-trips".
The mother road rally I was referring to is a very loose group with a rally master an organized route and suggested stop places. It is up to you to make all of your arrangements. You can follow the rally master or blaze your own trail. The years I have made the ride, there are 50-80 bikes, so it is important to break into small groups.

We plan on starting out the weekend of the 20th of June. I am in the Army Reserve so I have to work around my Drill schedule. I was mapping out the trip tonight. We will probably pick up 66 in St. Louise and take it all the way out to Cali. Then we are going to head nor the through Vegas then on to Denver and straight back across I-70 back to Indy. The wives are going to Florida while we are gone, so its just gonna be the guys. Not sure if we can do all that in a week. If we go a bit over, the boss will just have to deal with it.
Still in the planning stage, haven't done the math on how many mile we will be able to get in a day, but I'm pretty sure we can make it if the weather doesn't slow us down.
