We are going to the west coast this summer through estes park on 34 and then 80 out of craig but we are hearing we should stay off of 84 at all cost because of the high winds. is there anything to this. We want to go into oregon and ride along the columbia river but will give that up if there is nothing worth seeing and the ride will suck!
I am assuming you mean I 84? its the west so it can be windy, but not that bad, heck I've rode it lots of times, you could also take 50, the loniest hiway out to the coast and then ride up the Oregon coast, and then ride east along the Columbia, but don't worry about riding 84, wind is no better or worse than anyplace else out here.
The ride through Big Thompson would be a nice ride, no doubt about it.
However, that route and the Estes Park/Rocky Mountain National Park get exceedingly crowded and congested in the summer. I would suggest that you try CO 14 out of Fort Collins through Rustic. A very nice ride, and much, much less crowded. The route follows the Poudre River.
Of course, if your objective is Rocky Mountain Park, then, by all means go for it. It is a great area, but crowded.
