The route is good in either direction. While you're in the area, you may also like the ride on St. Joseph's highway.

I rode it July 2008 from Red Lodge, MT and turned off on the Chief Joseph to Cody, WY. If had more time I would have turned around and done it again in the other direction. Check the MT and WY DOT websites to make sure its open. Last year Beartooth Pass didn't open until late June, and Going to the Sun road opened July 3.

It'll be a great ride - perhaps one of the most scenic rides in America. Definitely travel on the Chief Joseph Highway - it would be a shame to miss such beauty.

Carry very warm clothes - you might be surprised to see snow at the highest elevations!

Red Lodge and Cooke City are nice places to stop.

Ride it both ways.

From Cody up The Chief Joseph Highway you will see the Bears Tooth. Awesome views all around the area.

From the top..

The pictures are great, and as you can see you get above the tree line. As stated above, you may find yourself wearing everything you own.

My desire is to head that way after the daughter returns from Iraq. We are caregivers for a 5 yr old. The wife and I have not been ridin' that much lately, but will make up for lost time.
