Default Upcoming trip

I am starting to see the end of my Tour in AFGHANISTAN in site!!!! I am about 6 weeks away then I will be home and can pick up my new RKC. Then in June I have a trip from west texas to western NY where my parents are. It is roughly 1600 miles. I am allowing 3 days up and 3 days back. I plan on hitting parts of old rt 66. Is there anywhere you suggest as a must see??? Plus I am gathering a buying list of things I have to have before the trip. Here are the major components I am planning on:

small toolkit
highway pegs
Chaps (already bought)
Jacket (already bought)
New Helmet
New Boots (not necessary but would like)
T-bag (really need help with this one)
GPS that plays music (would like but not necessary)
Gloves
Rain suit (cause if I buy it i will not need it)
disc lock (sugestions please)

Ok I know I am missing stuff please help. Do they make a windshield lock for the detachable windshield? Thanks in advance

Thumbs up

if you can spare the time the blue ridge parkway and skyline drive are great, but they're kind of low speed roads.
i'd recomend the tourpack, then you can add a t-bag or whatever on the passenger spot.
highway pegs are a must in my own opinion. (they are too personal for me to even want to recomend one to you)
you might want to look into changing your seat out. (you'll know what you think of it by the time you get to New York).
I've been pretty happy with nelson rigg cheap rain-gear, it doesn't breath but it stows pretty well and it fits over leathers.
can't help you with the gps, i use j&m helmets with the coms and music and all that. but unless you want a talking gps too you can just use an i-pod and get the headphones that loop back behind your head (they fit pretty well with a half helmet)

i got an '07 rkc first new vehicle i ever bought and love it. good luck

welcome to the forums and thanks for your service!

oh yeah P.M. if you have questions about what i've got for a set-up or anything

I'll guess that's all highway miles...

Break in the bike and get use to it.

One of the first things I did was to replace the shift linkage with the heim-joint model.

Consider a backrest...even with highway pegs, the low back will take a beating.

Enjoy the ride!

Dude, if you can survive Afghanistan, Texas to New York will be a cake walk!
You've got your bases covered, all I wanted to say was thanks for your service and Godspeed coming home!

My backrest makes my long rides much more comfortable.

You may want to consider one of these air seat pads:

As far as a helmet, one of the lightest and most comfortable is the ACC helmet. I have the polo DOT model.

Thanks for your service, my brother did the same thing, hopped on a brand new softail in San Diago after returning home, and rode 1500 miles to Iowa. He did fine and I'm sure you will too.

Thanks for your service to this great country. You guys are the ones that keep it where we can load up and take a road trip any time we want. My first two suggestions would be a different seat, I like Mustang seats, or at least an air cushion and the back rest is indespensible for long trips.

G on line to the JPCycle.com site and look at the First Gear two peice rainsuit. I've been riding since 1963 and this rain suite is the best I've had. Big enough to put on over your leathers and works great. Also might want to get the first gear fubber boots. A little pricey but they will last forever and they really do work!! I'm personally not fond of the disc locks cause I've seen too many people drive off with them still on and really embarass themselves. I've been back and forth across the country several times and seldom worry about sombody stealing my bike. You just have to be aware of where you spend the night. If necessary, you can park you ride in front of the check in desk under the lights. I do when I can't get a room with parking out front. The fork locks work as a good enought deterrent. That JPcycles site will give you some good ideas and the service is great. Stay away from the rain gators cause they suck and are a waste of money. I'll give you mine if you want. Ear plugs, the military type (the yellow foam ones) are also a must have. The wind noise tires you out and is really damaging to the ears. They can be washed easily and reused for a long time. Want to also thank you for your sacfifice and survice. I truely mean it. (retired CW 4) who spent some time overseas. Jungle qualified but wanted to get some desert training but am a little too ancient!! Have a great trip.
