Default Need some good roads

We are leaving June 11 for Deals gap. Picking up a friend in Michigan City IN. Our first stop is Louisville Ky, but I don't want to ride the highway all the way. Is there a better route or is it basically 65 the whole way. Got to be some cool little towns to go through off the beaten path. I know some good roads from Grand Rapids to Michigan city, And day two from Louisville to Robbinsville look fun, its just that one stretch. Boring.

Hmmm not trying to be flip, but, gps + google maps is your friend. You can make a route on google maps as convoluted as you want and send it to your gps. Went from Raleigh to Roanoke this weekend with this method and wouldn't of made it 10 miles if I didn't have the GPS telling me where to go since I was way off the beaten path with LOTS of road changes.

US-27 from KY down into TN is a nice ride. From Louisville, take I-64 east to Frankfort, KY, where ya can get off on US-127 south. Take that down to Danville, KY and find US-150 east. Take that over to US-27, and take that south. Once ya get below Somerset, KY the ridin gets much more scenic. Ya can follow US-27 all the way down to Spring City, TN where you'll hang a left on TN-68 south just below Spring City. From there ya can go a couple ways:

1) Follow TN-68 all the way to Tellico Plains, TN...and, pick up the Cherohala Skyway over the mountain to Robbinsville. Anyone in Robbinsville can direct ya to Deals Gap.

2) Follow TN-68 to US-411 in Madisonville. Take US-411 north maybe 12 miles to just above Vonore...take a right on TN-72, which will take ya over to US-129, where you'll hang a right...which takes ya to Deals Gap and the Dragon...Robbinsville is on beyond the Dragon. Be careful on that stretch of TN-72...it's fairly straight for a ways, and then a couple curves sneak up on ya...one of which tightens up once yer in it. That li'l curve has taken its toll on quite a few folks before they even get to the Dragon...just not expectin it.

As for Deals Gap and the Dragon...I suggest ya ride it durin the week...weekends can get crazy up there.

Hubby and I rode up to Traverse City, MI last summer. We rode up through Deals Gap for a quickie, then hubby wanted to hit the Cumberland Gap, because he had never been there. This is the route that we took. Fantastic roads. I don't know if you have lodging set up yet for when you go to Deals Gap or not, but I gotta get a plug in for my favorite campground Kickstand Lodge . It's motorcycles only, and Mo, who runs it, is great!! Once you've been there once, it's more like you are just visiting family than staying somewhere. Breakfast and dinner are served family style. Mo cooks, and everyone just throws money into the pot to cover costs. And nights by the campfire or on the deck, BSing with everyone else there, enjoying you favorite cold (or hot) beverage of choice can't be beat!
(Come to think of it, I need a trip to the KSL. 'Haven't been there myself in almost a year!)

If you're coming through Nashville, TN, I highly suggest a side trip to the Jack Daniels Distillery. Exit off of I-24 at exit 111 or 112 (not sure which one) for Route 55 towards Tullahoma & Lynchburg. The distillery is one of the neatest tours I've ever been on.
