I thought I was reading my plan when I read your thread. I think I may retire next year from GM after 30 years. I plan on working after a short time, But all my life I have wanted to roll down the other side of the rockies and see the big trees before I die. I love my wife and won't even joke about leaving her, but with her hip problems we have no chance of making it to Wisconsin much less California. I am hoping to get one or three friends to take the trip, but one way or the other I am going to do it. I am going to try to plan a northern route out west via Black hills, Highway to sky along with other great roads that are not too circuitous or unpaved. Then I thought about going down the coast and through the desert then east via N. Carolina and the dragon then up the West Virginia Turnpike through South Ohio Hills country and back to Lansing. I know there must be like 500 mapped out routes that cover this path, but I have not put together the details yet.

send me a PM when you are heading out and I will give you some contact info... my friends and I know the western US extremely well so I would be happy to help be a tour guide or help suggest places to stay in our area.

I rode from Connecticut to the Grand Canyon and back last year on a solo. Took Rte. 50 across. What an experience. Met alot of nice people on the way. I understand your wifes concerns. My wife was the same way. Called every night to let her know where I was and that I was safe. Two days before I got to Arizona I called my wife and asked her what she was doing for the upcoming week. Her reply, nothing much. Told her to fly out to Flagstaff and meet me and we would do the canyon together. She did and we spent 4 days riding around the canyon, Sedona and Rte. 66, and also did Vegas. She had a great time. I rode back via another southern rte. and did the dragon, part of the Natchez Trace pkwy and The Blue Ridge pkwy. The best thing I ever did. Enjoyed the ride immensely. So much so that this Sept. my wife and I are flying out to Vegas and renting a bike and doing the national parks in UT: Zion, Bryce, Arches,Canyon lands, Rte. 66 and more. Include your wife in some of your trip. That way you'll both enjoy it. Beleive me doing a cross country is the trip of a lifetime, you'll never forget. Hope to see you on the road.
