We are doing the same ride but from Seattle in mid August here is a link to our route. Keep in mind the 101 can be slow especialy on the Oregon coast with RVS and small towns with speed traps. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...73&ie=UTF8&z=6

I live south of Eugene Oregon and have several customers on the Oregon coast. The Oregon coast is very scenic and pretty but just be prepared for as the previous poster stated a lot of small towns and tourist traffic so some areas can be slow going during the heavy summer tourist time. There are several great scenic pull offs along the way, just take your time and also remember with tourist come speed traps so watch out for that as well. Two other things to remember, first that when traveling on roads like hwy 101 which has a lot of slow twisty corners is that sometimes the RV's will cross onto your side of the road or will pull gravel into the corners as they cut the corners short, second sometimes when its really hot in the Willamette Valley the coast or parts of the coast with get fogged in with the marine layer coming off the water but usually this time of year the weather is pretty nice along the coast of Oregon, not much rain just sometimes a little foggy.
Enjoy your trip and have a great time. I have to go to southern California the first week of September for work and was thinking of riding the coast down and then having to come up the interstate to get home faster but we will see.

I have ridden both below SF and From SF to Canada... the BEST is North of SF... really did not enjoy the southern route but if you have not done it and you have to go to LA anyway. Its better than I-5 or 99 (I live about a mile off 99 - if you are coming through - I always have cold beer here for a forum member)..
Get fuel BEFORE you get out of the Carmel area.. there is a small place just north of Big Sur that is a real rip off ...
I am going on a trip from Vancouver to San francisco and I would like to take the 101 highway, can you folks tell me what is the best way to go.
thanks
Since you are from Vancouver - then you have to be used to traffic - However, the traffic in SF is a very different animal... keep your eyes OPEN all the time... Just take Highway 1 at Legget Ca... this is where 101 and 1 split... 1 is on the coast...101 is NOT...
