Roadking

I made this plan on the Harley ride planner..... http://rideplanner.harley-davidson.c...r/share/259653

I don't know where you are starting from but this will keep you off of interstate from Tombstone to Carlsbad and there are gas stations in Bisbee AZ, Douglas AZ, Animas NM, Columbus NM, and Deming NM the longest stretch is between the turn off between Rodeo NM off of 80 onto NM 9 and Columbus. This a good road with out a lot of traffic.

The road between Alamogordo and Artesia is quite scenic. There is a road (not included in plan) that goes between Cloudcroft and Ruidoso that will add to the moutain portion of your ride, if you are interested let me know.

I've never ridden on 724 which is after White City (Carlsbad Caverns) and hooks up with 285 that goes down to Ft Stockton TX, so you might want to do some prior research.

Brew pubs in Las Cruces and Artesia if you are interested.

Historical stops.
Tombstone of course.
Messilla NM
Lincoln NM
Billy the Kid Historic Trial

The last two are close to Ruidoso NM I mentioned before.

Let me know when you are in the area and I'll try to ride with you a bit.

You might also post this to
Regional Events, Rides and Road Reports in the Southwest, you should get more information about the AZ and TX portion of your ride.

thanks for your input Ayers!!
I will take your advice from tombstone into las cruces, from there I think I'll head to carsbad caverns & then to san antonio. If I have time on the return trip, I wanted to stop in luchenbach (?) tx on my way to old fort sumner to see Billy the Kid, from there maybe thru sedona on my way home.
I plan on being in your area around sept 26, give or take a day. I will be finalizing my itin next week sometime.

you mentioned Mesilla as a historical stop, what might I find there?

thanks again

Dave

Roadking,

Mesilla is where Billy the Kid was tried for murder and then sent back to Lincoln to hang. He escaped from Lincoln, killing two guards in the process. He was later found in the Ft. Sumner area and killed by Pat Garrett.

Mesilla is also the location of the signing of the Guadalupe Hidalgo. Alot of history in the area. Check out this link http://www.oldmesilla.org/html/history_of_mesilla.html.

If you are interested in Billythe Kid you definitely should check out the Ruidoso/Lincoln area after Ft Sumner.

Hope you enjoy your stay and journey through out our state.
