I've never been, but remember reading in HOG Tales that on one side the road hugs the river much closer than the other. Don't remember which side, though. I think it's in the latest issue, and I have it at home. When I get off work, I'll see if I can find it and post.
Sounds like a fun ride. [sm=biker.gif]

I just did this ride yesterday! At least what I call the upper half. All my riding has been on the Wisconsin side, since I'm from Wisconsin. I've done Prairie du Chien to La Crosse several times. (I call this the lower half) You ride close to the river along this whole stretch. Even a set of railroad tracks between the road & the river. I like this stretch. Yesterday we went from La Crosse, north. Had never done this yet. Goes all the way up to Prescott, where the River Road goes into Minnesota. It was still a nice ride, just more stretches where you're not as close to the river. You have to get past Fountain City to see more river views. We ended up taking Hwy 10 back to the east to satrt working our way home. Was a 544 mile round trip for us. All in all, the River road is a great run. Plenty of small towns to break things up a bit, and some locks to observe. Plenty of scenic overlooks & historical sites to pull over & check out, too. If you do it, have a safe trip and enjoy!

Hwy 35 on the Wisconsin side has been called "The Great River Road" for years; not sure who named it that but I'm pretty sure it has to do with its proximity to the river. I've done both sides and they're both great, but I prefer the Wisconsin side. LaCrosse to Prairie du Chien really hugs the river and you pass through several quaint little towns where you would be able to grab a sandwich (from a pub), get gas, etc. Also lots of vistas and overlooks for taking a break...watch for signs that will take you to some of the overlooks as they are not always right along the road.
