I took a trip from Nashville, TN to Portland Oregon, it took 4days that was in a car and we didn't stop for ****. It sucked bad. I would say about 7-10days for comfort.
The maps and such (trip planners) won't figure in weather, traffic, etc, so you'd probably have to add possibly an hour or two of weather problems (heavy rains, dust storms, if ur around AZ, snow), traffic jams/accidents, per day.

i am riding my xl1200n cross from ny to las vegas, and back spring or fall 2010. i have done 300- 500 miles a day on many bikes. the nightster feels up to the task. i currently do not use a windshield, but MIGHT throw one on for the 5000 + mile trip.
i am taking off 26 days to do the trip.
i have put many many hours into finding good routes, and campgrounds. all that will probably go to poop when i hit my first good storm. lol.
i have to be honest... if i have to detour, or divert... i'll be fine with that. i like to just wing it once on the road. modern toys, like the cell and a small packable laptop are great for quick evening planning.
the one thing i will be adding to the nightster is a 12v outlet for charging the cell, laptop and gps. i also have a solar charger that secures nicely to the top of the bikers friend bag.
