Hi all -

Next fall, my wife and I are planning a trip to Italy, and I was wondering if it would be possible to take a one-way trip with a rented motorcycle. We'll be flying from Boston to London, and then from London to Rome. From Rome I ws thinking that we would head to Amsterdam (or France, or Spain) on a rented bike, and then get on a flight there to head back to London.

Can this be done? Are there any rental places over there that allow one-way travel?

Thanks - any info you might have would be greatly appreciated!

Not that I've heard of, remember your not even dropping the bike in the same country. Why not rent in London and ride to Rome in three days, See France and Switzerland on the way.

Try Warr's HD in London. Oldest Harley dealer in the UK. If they don't hire, they'll know who to contact. HOG UK can help here. Go thru the Chunnel to France, or rent in Scotland (last year, I went from Stonehaven in Scotland, took the overnight ferry from Rosythe (near Edinburgh) to Zeebrugge in Belgium, into France, through Lille, Paris, Nantes, Le Mans, down to Bordeaux and across to Cahors through the Lot Valley. Then Poitiers, Limoges, through the Loire Valley, onto Versailles and back to Zeebrugge.
Took 14 days, did 2500 miles on my 1988 Softail. Bed and Breakfasts (Chambre d'hotes) are cheap, and brilliant. Learn basic French before you go - the locals appreciate it. Such fine people. I'd do it again, but Italy beckons. Or maybe Spain!
Keep to 250 miles a day - any more becomes a chore. Good luck. Keep us posted on the trip.

Thanks for the thoughts on the trip! I'll have to do some research into just taking a bike from London and making the trip from there. It'll all depend on how much time the wife will want to spend riding as opposed to laying around drinking wine....

I'll definitely post updates on our plan as the trip gets closer!

A group of us do a trip to Austria every other year. We meet at 6 am on Monday, ride the 85 miles to the channel ferry for an 8 am crossing. The tunnel is quicker but more expensive and we have breakfast on the ferry. A lot of France and Belgium is shut on Sunday and Monday, Italy can be difficult getting gas on back roads on Sundays too. We then do a long day to get 400+ miles into France, after that it's about 250 a day on back roads. We start at 9 and get to our hotel by 3 or 4.
You also said next fall was when you were planning to go, don't leave it too late in the year ,Sept is usually good. We were in Italythis August and it was over 100f, Sept tends to be more comfortable

One way rentals
Try contacting the 'European Possee Ride' group, as seen on the HOG website. They have their event planned for this year from Prague to Rome, one way. May not be the trip you are looking for but they may have the info or contacts that you are looking for.
