Default Auto Train anyone????

My husband and I are in the planning stages of a Key West Florida trip.

Has anyone here ever used the Auto Train??? We are thinking about it and was wondering if anyone has anything good or bad to say about it.

We are somewhat limited on time and would rather spend the time riding in Florida than taking the extra days riding just to get there.

I have searched this forum and have found alot of info on Key West trips but VERY little on taking the train down.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Years ago [while stationed at the Sub Base in Groton, CT] we would take the Auto Train over the Christmas holidays. The Lorton, VA, station was about 6 hours away. We always paid the extra $$$ for a "sleeper roomette" and it was refreshing to wake up in Florida the next day. Never had any problems with the train or with the vehicle. Never did use it for a scoot though? Last I heard, prices were kinda steep...

My mom loves it, she's taken it from FL to VA a few times now. I'm thinking about doing a fall ride where I take it from FL to VA, then ride home down the blue ridge and all. The only thing I can thing to tell you is that my mom gets a sleeper but doesn't bother with a bathroom. Also, the prices were really steep but seem to have come down quite a bit!

For what you would spend on the train (fare plus room) round trip you could purchase a brand new, or even cheaper you could rent or buy a used one, trailer and drive to a jump off point in Florida. This way you are not bound by a schedule and come and go as you please.
I've been to Keys many times in these last 25 years, riding, fishing and have stayed for months at a time and if I can be of any help feel free to PM me.

Yes, the prices seem to be a little steep. I called Amtrak today to see what the charge is to take a bike and the trailer we would like to pull behind it. We would be charged for 2 bikes. So that is over $700 for the bike, trailer, and regular seats. No sleeper car!!!!

Borrowing a trailer is always a possiblity. Thanks for the pm offer. I will keep you in mind if I have any questions.

Auto train? Trailer?Really?I'm sorry, don't mean to give you a hard time but riding the motorcycle is why you got one isn't it? You have one of the nicest touring motorcycles in the world.Take the bike and live the adventure.Life is too short to not take the bike! Just don't stay at south of the border.Good luck.

I hear ya and understand what you are saying. Believe me, this bike has never seen the inside of a trailer before. I know that part of the adventure is in the ride there.

Unfortunately, at this point, we have a certain time schedule and I really don't want to take the extra days just to get there and back. I can be in Orlando in about 16 hours driving a car. There is no way I could handle a 16 hour ride on the bike. As much as I love to ride, I just can't do it. I have been up and down the east coast too many times to count, I really wouldn't feel like I was missing anything. I would rather start our adventures in Florida refreshed and ready to go. Not sure if I would feel that way after a few days of seeing I-95.

But you never know, this trip is a year away. You may see a dragonfly green UltraClassic pulling a trailer headed down I-95

Might consider a flight into ft myers, ft lauderdale or miami with a multi-day rental.
Would save some time..although it will not be your bike..
Ft Myers would bring you about 3 hours from the beginning of the florida keys.
The "florida Keys welcome sign"
You would also be able to take alligator alley(west to east) on the way down and then tamiami trail(east to west) on the way back.
There is a tour company called first class motorcycle tours that uses the train.
