Lots of great riding near me, and it's not far from you either --- N Western & N Central PA, as well as upstate Central NY.

Instead of going to Maine, why not just go as far as VT and NH instead. It's closer and there are plenty of nice places to ride in VT/NH.

You didn't say WHERE in Maine you were going! It's still freezing cold there (at least in Bangor) in May and the weather is normally raining from May 1 to Mid June. I made the trip from Maine to Milwaukee in the beginning of June and it was freezing cold until I got past Yew York!
If you do go to Maine...or up in that direction, carry plenty of dry clothes, and a good quality rain suit.

You could go to Mount Washington area of New Hampshire. Its 841 miles and 18 hours to the Mountain. Its about 6000 feet up and then you are only two hours from Portland. Then you can take Route 1 up the coast. Make sure you get the Faspast for the tolls. OR you could go to the Lake George/Placid area. Google maps says its only 10 hours or 638 miles. Really pretty in the spring on the mountain roads. They got a good sized moutain up there, Whitefaced Mountain, 4700 feet.............

i went to Maine last year during the first week of July, it was a cool ride up and then when we got to Bar Harbour is rained cold for 3 days. When we went through Arcadia N.P. it was just over freezing a few more degrees it would have been snow or freezing rain, bring a great rainsuit and your winter gear and about 7 days to complete your trip.

I live in NE Ohio and have ridden up to New england the last two years. May is a crapshoot as far as weather, can still be quite cold and very wet.

A nice 5 day ride would be up to the PA Grand Canyon, then down through the Allegheny Mts (Rt 219) into Md, across Rt18 into WV and then up into southern Ohio into the Hocking hills area and then home. Plenty of good roads in all of those areas and you are further south so a better chance of good weather. I would not do Maine in 5 days, just too much riding and not enough sightseeing. It is beautiful through Vt, NH and Maine.

I agree with the others that a ride to Maine in five days is too ambitious. If you decide on Maine, the Moosehead Lake region is real Maine or of course almost anywhere along the coast but Acadia National Park is nice. Keep in mind too that the coast is busy in the summer. If you're looking for an east/west two laner passage through Maine, Rte 202 is very slow, one small town after another. Rte 2 is pretty good.

I'm biased but NH/Vt would be a better choice for a five day trip. Here's an idea for routes. Take the superslab out to I-84 in NY and then get on the Taconic Parkway North then to Rte 22. Rte 7 gets you to Vt where it changes to Rte 9. In Bennington, Vt take Rte 7 North. Take Rte 17 either across Lincoln Gap or Appalachian Gap (both have nice vistas at the top) and both end up at Rte 100. Rte 100 takes you up to I-89 for a bit. Get off in Montpelier and see our capital "city" and continue on Rte 302 into NH. Take Rte 112 in Woodsville, NH over to Conway. The stretch between Lincoln and Conway is the Kancamagus Highway which is a nice ride. From Conway you could head north to Mt Washington or south toward Meredith and Laconia depending on time constraints.

I agree. If you want the ride to be enjoyable there are a lot of places in PA/WV/KY and even south eastern Ohio where you could run a decent pace and run some good roads.
