Anyone do a US 50 across the Midwest to Colorado? I am planning out a 8 day(maybe) 4 out & 4 back, from eastern Missouri thru Kansas to Royal Gorge and on to Grand Junction, if time down the Million Dollar Highway and return via Durango to Pueblo and back to E Mo. Little to no interstate use, slow and steady ride, iron butt.
I don't know anything about US-50 until ya get to Montrose, CO...but, heading north from Montrose to Grand Junction is a waste of riding time, as it's plain ole boring open highway. You'd be better off to turn south and do the Million Dollar Highway down to Durango.
My return route suggestion would be to take US-160 east outta Durango over to Pagosa Springs...hang a right on US-84 and take it down to Chama, NM...pick up US-64 east from there...will take ya over the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge...thru Taos...Eagles Nest...Cimarron Canyon...nice ride. Not too far east of there it's gets to be a six of one thing, half dozen of the other, as you're getting back into the plains. However, I have found US-160 and US-166 to be really nice rides across Kansas...especially US-166.
I rode Rt 50 from WV through Colorado and I would take this route again It's a pleasant road to take across this part of the country. Naturally western Kansas and eastern Colorado are flat and sort of "bland" but that's the case no matter what road you take. But 50 in Colorado along the Arkansas river and on west is nice.
