Can anyone recommend a website that gives a straight forward break down of which state requires helmets? Also I’m told that some require a certain amount\size of reflective tape\decal on the helmet. I’ve looked around but haven’t seen anything concrete, we plan to do some travelling throughout the NE soon and would like to know what to expect sooner than later.
You "should" wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle, driving a car, using stairs, walking on cement sidewalks, riding a bicycle, taking a bath or shower, riding a horse, skiing, snowboarding, when head-butting someone........
But why "would" you? Well, maybe when head-butting someone....
The other day while at a local park I was taking in some peace and quiet. Some time passes and the park begins to fill up. Decide to move to another location within the park but further down from the crowds. Jump on my bike to move maybe a 100 yrds away and without strapping on the skull cap. A deputy sheriff wheels in behind me and hits the siren. You got to be kidding me! He just tells me that MO law requires every rider to wear a helmet. Looking across the park there goes a pick-up truck full of kids in the back of the truck headed to a baseball game. Pointed that out to the deputy and I said explain that!

Had that happen to me in Ga. back in the 80's. I was moving from one end of a parking lot to the other.
Got to court and asked the them to read the statute. It said streets and right of ways. I asked the cop if I was on the street, he said no. I asked him if it was on the right of way, he said no. I asked the cop why he gave me a ticket...The judge said he'd like to know why also.
I will say that it is PROBABLY best to look up the states that you are going to, OR call the State Police of that state because these websites. although very informative in some states, are not one hundred percent correct. I am a Texas Peace Officer and none of these websites are correct. Remember most states update their traffic laws every two years, and from the looks of things these sites h ave not updated. Texas just made things pretty simple..No Helmet Rerquired - They even pulled the health insurance requirement - so who knows, maybe a state that is reported on these sites to be strict, have actually relaxed some of their laws. who knows.
I tried calling state police once,in Colorado,Good luck getting a straight answer! the officer I spoke to,just kept saying "should" and to wear a helmet, never did answer my question..turned out they didn't have a helmet law.
