I've got a West Coast trip coming up on Friday. The group of four has been reduced to one (me), so I'm going to be camping instead of hoteling. Guerrilla camping is fine with me, as well as developed campgrounds in a National Forest or State Park. I'm trying to steer clear of the KOAs (don't really care for the RV generator-drone), but one will do as a last resort. I'm looking for some nice camping spots in the following towns (or within 25-35 miles or so):
Dillon, MT
Spokane, WA
Port Angeles/Forks, WA
Coos Bay, OR
near Crater Lake NP, OR
near Redwood NP, CA
Humbolt State Park, CA
Jenner/Bodega Bay, CA
Monterey/Big Sur, CA
Bannack State Park is not too far from Dillon. It's a ghost town and was the first territorial capital of Montana. There is a nice little campground there right on the meandering creek on the edge of the ghost town. There are also some FS campgrounds in the Pioneer Mountains north of Polaris (again, not too far from Dillon.)
Spokane, WA
Port Angeles/Forks, WA
I'll let someone else talk about Spokane, but there is a lot around Coeur d'Alene (15 mins away).
The best camping off of US 101 is in Olympic National Park. Stay away from the craziness of Sol Duc. Push on to the Hoh Rain Forest or to any of the campgrounds on the beaches. I used to live in WA and rode/camped all the time out there. If you fly fish, there are some great rivers out there, but watch the regs--every river is different. EDIT: Kalaloch campground is my favorite.
I just went to the Redwoods near Fortuna. I am not a camper, but there are so many places to camp among the Redwoods. I was just there over the Memorial weekend. I picked up a magazine called 101 things to do Humbolt. The mag is free and full of info!! Camping , lodging, maps, state parks. If you have time check out the LOST COAST LOOP it is fabulous. Also do the Avenue of the Giants. It is a 31 mile Redwood Run through some magnificent scenery. South of Jenner there is Wrights Beach, good camping spot, but stay away from the Ocean it is a man eater, lots of lives have been lost because of the waves and currents!! You can ride all the way down HWY 1 to San Fran, not to be missed. To bad I have to work, I would show you around. If you need any more info give me a call, 7073224780. Be safe.
U can camp in the park at Crater lake. Look online at the national park service website. I did it last year and it is a pretty nice setup.
Camping along the Big Sur coastline requires reservations or luck. Look at the California state parks website. There are first come, first served campsites, but I wouldn't count on getting one of them late in the day. There is one on the north end of the 1 above big sur that is a hike in.
south of there, you could stay somewhere in san simeon or morro bay or pismo.
U will love the ride.
And leaving Crater lake, take the 199 toward Ft Bragg, then head on down the coast from there.
Enjoy
just to whet the appetite, here are a couple of pics

+1 on Kalaloch it is right on the beach about 15 miles south of Forks. Also some nice campgrounds on Lake Crescent between Forks and Port Angles . Take a ride up to Hurricane Ridge near Port Angles a great view on clear day also have camp rounds on the way up.
