just got back from " the dragon" nice road but i enjoyed the sky way and some of the other roads more. the owner of hunts lodge, tellico plains , has a saying go to end of driveway get a bottle out of ditch, spin it , and take that road. there is not a bad road out there. hunts lodge is for riders, digs are good and basic , a/c and hot showers, clean cabins , nice owners .
We just got back too. Found our rental on vrbo.com. We've always had good luck with that site. The "cabin" was neat, but not really a cabin, more of a townhouse. The upshot was that it was at the top of a really sweet road that kinda primed your pump each morning going down, and gave you a feeling of accomplishment when you rode up at the end of the day.
It's worth mentioning that there is a forum member that has a cabin for rent in the PF/Gatlinburg area. Had we not been booked that would have been our choice. You can find it in the other gear/stuff section.
I'll also second the thoughts on the "Dragon." We went there to ride it, and we did, but the other roads there were just as or more beautiful. The dragon being closed on one end probably didn't help...would have felt more natural to just ride through than up and back. All our other riding out there was just as good or better, but like I said, we went to do it. It'll be worth going back for at some point, especially after it's fully open. For some reason Wears Valley really stands out in my mind as an unexpectedly beautiful ride. I kept having to remind myself that these were public roads built for transportation and not just an amusement park built for my enjoyment. What a great place to ride!
