2 good rides in Western, NC
From Burnsville we hit windy gap rd/laurel valley rd and turned on us-23. At flag pond we took TN-352/Devils Fork Rd which becomes NC-212. Turned left on NC-208 then right on US-25/US-70. Took NC-209 through what we call Spring Creek all the way to Wayneville, NC. Once through Waynesville we hit Pigeon St./US-276 up Mt Pisgah and took the Parkway north to Swannanoa/US-70W. Took 70 to US-19/US-25 all the way to Forks of Ivy and took Beech Glen rd. That turns into Paint Fork Rd which turns into Horton Ck. At the end of Horton Ck. we were pretty much back in Burnsville and ready to go to sleep.
We had a great day together seeing a lot of roads we hadn't been on yet. The rock slide between Mt Pisgah and Asheville on the parkway is still a work in progress but there is one lane open. here is a link to the path we took on Mapquest: HERE
Friday July 9th the wife and kids took off to Dollywood in Pigeon Forge so I rode my bike down Friday evening. I went from Burnsville through Hot Springs, NC and Newport, TN to get there for a total of about 100 miles or so. Saturday Morning I left pigeon Forge and rode to Maryville, TN and visited Smokey Mountain Harley Davidson's main store and boy is it huge. left there and rode US-129 (Tail of the Dragon) and yes it is open now. The rock slide looked like it was a mess and looks like the rest could fall any minute. At the southern end of US-129 I took US-19/NC-74 and rode to Cherokee Indian Reservation. From there on 441 through Waynesville to I-40 and rode to Marion where my parents have a camper on the lake. She had supper ready
. Left there and rode back to Burnsville. After making a few rounds in pigeon Forge my total trip was close to 400 miles. Mapquest link to it is here: HEREWas a great first time ride through the Dragon (was fun but really I kind of expected more)and enjoyed myself very much on this trip.
I highly recommend both of these rides if you are in the area. The first ride was probably more curvy since it was more 2 lane roads than the longer trip.
