I'm riding down to Albq NM from Ft Riley Ks, spend a few days then ride to Phoenix. My question is has anyone taken Highway 60 West from Albq to Hwy 260, then Hwy 87 So from Payson down to Phoenix. Looking at riding late Aug...
The route looks very scenic, I was thinking about staying off the I-40 any thoughts would be helpful.
that looks like a nice way in august, keeps you in the higher elevations (ie cooler) until you come down the hill by fort mcdowell, it's like riding into a furnace at times coming down from payson on 87
That's a good ride, don't forget to take ten at the VLA,the radio telescopes listening for ET.Couple of choices when you get to springerville, south on 191 is fun but, don't do it after dark, you can't see far enough ahead to make any speed ,the dragon is 11 miles of curves,191 is about 50 of the same kind.If you decide to stay on 60 through salt river canyon watch real close at the bottom just after the curve, there's a short gravel rd. you can take under the bridge, take the boot's off and, stick your feet in the water, cool you right off. There's a lot of good riding in Ariz.have fun.
Thanks guys, I appreciate the updates. Nomad billy don't think I'll get on 191 just stay on 60 to 260 then from Payson so on 87 to Phx. Staying two days there, then I have to head back the same way....Uncle Sam is calling, LOL only a few days of leave, then back to Ft Riley KS haha.
Nomad Billy ain't kiddin' about 191, "The Devil's Highway" (It used to be Arizona 666.. )
I rode through there in late March on a run from Albuquerque to Tombstone and it's the only road
I've ever been on where for miles it's marked "Speed Limit 10".
I was just in Pietown and Quemado a couple weeks ago and 60 is just fine.
Don't forget to fill up whenever you have the chance; there aren't a lot of gas stations.
