Away from the coast the back roads are a dream, whether mountain hairpins or arrow straight on the plains. Hardly touched the Autovia s.
Scenery stunning.
People friendly.
Food and drink cheap.
And...... you can smoke just about anywhere!

I am jealous. Wife and I hosted a student from Tolosa. We have decided to try and get over there and do the same thing. The Basque Country looks ideal.

If your in the North the "Picos de Europa" (Google them) are a treat. Dont expect crash barriers on the hairpins though! Oh and beware of the cattle. Oh yeah and the goats.

In Basque Country the bi-lingual roadsigns meant I didnt know where I was in two languages at the same time!

Great trip!! I did a similar trip a year ago, but I leased a Peugeot. Started out in Paris and hit Spain from San Sebastian down to Cordoba (where my family originated) back up the Med to Paris. Great trip, would love to make it again but not so much into the big cities! Would LOVE to do it on a bike, but my wife won't ride --- bummer!

My wife's family is from Wales and I've run into that same problem each time I go over.

I plan on retiring in about 3 years and when I do I plan on shipping the bike over and touring Europe for 4-6 weeks.

Most of my time was out in the sticks on back roads amazing varied scenery. Some beautiful small towns with legacy right back to Moorish days.
I went solo but what about her backing you up in a car/van? means you dont need to carry about a ton of junk on the back of the bike!
