I lived in Mendocino County for 20 years. Its 3 hrs north of San Francisco. Follow 101 North, the take Hwy 128 from Cloverdale to the Coast, 64 miles. Its great. Lots of wineries, ends in the Redwoods and then the Ocean.
Once you hit Hwy 1, head north to the town of Mendocino, a State Historical District, then 8 miles more to Ft. Bragg. From there, it gets very rural as you follow Hwy 1 back to Hwy 101 at Legget and the Drive thru Redwood Tree.
