"It's free to drive there but leaving there is a $40 bridge toll (think it's less for motorcycles but not sure)" Bikes are $17.50 - 18.00 http://www.confederationbridge.com/en/

It's a shame as i'm pretty sure that very little besides inconvenience is accomplished.
You can blame the US government (and 9-11) for this new requirement. They insisted on the passports. You even need one to get back into the US.
Last time I drove to the US, couple of years ago now, they couldn't even be bothered to look at my DL, the US border guard just chatted me up for 30 seconds, said welcome, and then waved me through, getting back into Canada it was the same thing.

When I flew to the US this year I had to pass through US Customs in the Toronto airport. If you fly to the US you actually pass through US Customs before you leave Canada. They booted up my laptop and examined it as well as even checked my tooth paste. Lots of questions as to the purpose of my visit, etc.

we rode up the mississippi river last year on the way home from our trip. followed it from vidalia la. to mn. i would not do that again. boring ride until praire du chan iowa. from there north it is a fantastic ride. unless you really want to fish lake of the woods i would skip that whole area of mn. its flat boring swampland. my least favorite part of mn. i would instead recommend coming north from texas west of the river then cutting across iowa picking up the river near the iowa/mn. border.
then follow the river north to where it joins the st croix river. follow that to duluth and then up old 61 and cross into canada at thunder bay. that will give you some of the best that mn. has to offer.

I live up here and agree. If you really want to fish LOTW that's cool but not very scenic riding. It is relatively wet & flat there really is not much to see once you get away from Duluth or north of Grand Rapids. Although there is a 20 mile stretch on MN 38, Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway, between Marcell and Big Fork that is spectacular. If you ride at night up there be EXTREMELY careful the deer are very thick and very stupid.

Fishing is also good in the arrowhead. The north shore of Lake Superior is a great ride with parks, waterfalls and great scenery. In Duluth take a couple hours to ride the Skyline Drive, you'll get views of the Duluth Superior Harbor from all angles. In Canal Park you can be within 100' of the lakes freighters as they pass through the canal -very cool.

If you head toward Intl Falls, make sure that you watch your gas level, many of the small rural stations run out of gas on a regular basis, when you get to half a tank start looking just to be sure you don't wind up stranded. Folks up there are pretty good about looking out for each other, if you do get stranded someone will sell you a gallon. Email me if you would like more info.

What a fine gaggle of info. Am taking notes, getting a passport and makling firmer plans. Will probably spent the last week of June and maybe the first of July here to be sure business is smooth, them off for the trip.

Am still wondering if camping can be done on public lands away from populated areas as in the west, or if organized camp grounds are a "must".

FatTony, thanks for the links. My Son rides Orange with minimal mods. tell me about your Orange Thing????
