Ok, I was in the cage, but it was nice to be the only person on the Parkway for a while! Generally speaking, it is closed, except for a few miles north of Linville Falls. Definately not for a bike, plenty of ice and snow, really tough going in spots. There are construction signs up from Linville Falls exit north to the Grandfather Mtn. exit, gates up at US 221 and Linville exits. Hopefully it is going to be repaved this spring, it really needs it. You can see the survey stakes in a couple of the pics.
It will be at least 2 more months till I can take the N Train for a cruise, I need it bad.
We were up there at the end december.....at rt 8 near tuggles gap in Floyd...and it was closed .....snow....only got to go a few miles....wonder why they don't plow the BRP?
I think up here in the higher elevations, it simply costs too much money to try to keep it open in the winter months. The maintenance on the road has really went downhill in the past few years, I am surprised they have installed new guardrails and are going to actually resurface the worst parts.
This winter has really wreaked havoc on all the State roads in the High Country, when the spring thaw hits, they are going to have some major holes to patch as well.
Ya....your prolly right...we have land in Floyd county and make the trip up about 4 times a year....this winter all the roads from my dad's place in Winston...to our land were clear so we thought we would take the BRP back to us 52....we got about 5 miles on the parkway..rounded a curve...and it was closed..... we had to back track....went back to hwy 8 and took that back to Winston....damn.....what a crooked *** road....lol...
