Dont know much about other states, but in North Carolina, The Blue Ridge Parkway in the West or Hwy 12 through the outer Banks in the east. If you ride all the way through the Outer Banks, the ferry from Oakrecoke to Cedar Island is almost 3 hours.

I use to travel from Virginia Beach to Tilton, NH twice a year to see realtives, but in a car. Try going backway off 93 to Conn, take 9w out of Concord going to Keene and over to 91S and down 84 past Hartford, Southington, Waterbury, Danbury and then 684S to 287/87N to 17S I think it's Merritt Pky to 95s or NJ Turnpike and then 1/13S thru Delaware and across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and into Virginia Beach. Then 58 thru Suffolk and Franklin over to 95S again. The bridge use to be $10 one-way but it cuts off going thru Washington DC and all that traffic mess..
