Hoka Hey
More power to those that can afford to do it, or get the sponsorships to help pay for it. Hope they have fun doing it. I can't see busting ***** for weeks with little to no sleep each day (do the math, it's a lot of hours on the bike each day to get to the finish in the allotted amount of time). For the thousands of dollars it would cost, I want to stop and see some things in the country.
If you really want to do it, then research, research, research it. There's entire blogs about last year's ride, the many problems with it, the complaints, etc. On the other hand, you'll find others that didn't find the issues that others reported. Take things with a grain of salt that you read.
If it's on your bucket list, then do it. If you need a key chain or medallion to show that you completed this, then do it. If you believe that going through ancient burial areas will allow you to carry the spirits of the ancient fallen, then do it. Good luck on your decision.
I would not enter with the intention of trying to win. I would go solo (no wife) from Mesa to Iowa, then load up the wife and take her the rest of the way. Maybe do some campimg the first half, but then motel it when the wife is along. Motels and wives are against the rules, but I'm not planning on winning.
I would like to do the whole hoka hey ride, but not with the wife the whole time. It would be great to have another biker to ride with the first half. Big mile days are easier when you just stop and sleep along side the bike. I don't think the route is available unless an entry fee is paid, so picking up the route where it comes through Iowa would probably still require at least one entry fee.
I've asked all my friends that ride. For most, that much time off and the cost are the main stumbling blocks. Some just have no interest in riding that many miles. I should just forget about it, but what a trip it would be....
The trip is still there to do...

Did anyone read the column in this (or maybe last) months American Iron? I thought it was going to be a real positive story, but was pretty much the opposite, saying more or less that it was poorly run and organized.

The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
I've done and seen a lot of **** in my life and rank the Hoka Hey as the greatest Motorcycling experience I've ever had.
I can't see myself not doing it as long as I am physically and mentally able, and they continue to have it.
As soon as this years is over, I will be saving up for next year.
I highly recommend it.
