I could have made it more involving or zigzagging, but it will take you on roads/ride you mention, as well as on better alternatives than 285.
Good route, but I can recommend a slight change. From Dillon, take the I70 over the vail pass all the way to idaho springs. Then take a detour up to the top of Mt Evans, the highest road in North America. From Idaho Springs take the 119/72/7 to Estes park.
Have to agree with sfarson's great route. I'd add the eatern section of the Poudre Canyon hwy (14) going west out of Fort Colins since your in the area. When leaving Estes Park ,I took hwy 7 so. to 72,(Peak to Peak hwy),to 119 so. to I40. Also have to agree Wolf creek pass was beautiful.
I love driving through Co. Im not a fan of those high roads with no rails though. Is there some good rides that dont have 10000 ft drop offs. My hands get sweaty just driving my truck on those roads. Thanx!!

I'd second Mt Evans, but if you get to Idaho Springs there is a nice brewery downtime called TommyKnockers.
If you overlooked sfarson's link to "The Book" because you went directly to his suggested ride route, then go back up on this thread and check it out. A) I know that he knows what he is talking about when it comes to recommended Colorado routes, and B) No, I don't get anything for making this "plug." Just trust me on this one, guys. It will be well worth your Colorado ride and memories...
On a related topic, for my money -- you cannot beat the ride from Durango up through Silverton, Ouray and around to Telluride.
There could be a HDforum members meet-up in Colorado this summer. I will be riding up from san Diego first week of august. My question concerns the thunderstorms that pop-up. we dont see much rain and thunderstorms / lightning are very rare here. Do you ride thru that stuff? Safer to pull off? Obviously ,you dont try sheltering under trees.
