Since you will be traveling from DC to VA Beach, Stop in Fredericksburg VA & stop in for some of the best Ice Cream you will ever taste. Google Karl's Ice Cream. They were on the travel channel in a show of the top ten places for ice cream in America. ...Good luck with your trip!
Googled Karl's, but found it is really Carl's, with a C, not a K.
Carl's Ice Cream (also known as "Carl's Frozen Custard" or, most often, simply "Carl's") is a roadside ice cream stand located at 2200 Princess Anne Street, Fredericksburg, Virginia
If you find yourself anywhere close to the Dragon, it's worth the ride to go do the Cherohala Skyway. Best road I've ever rode in my life, bar none. Robbinsville, NC to Tellico Plains, TN. I've yet to find anybody that didn't like that road. It's very long, amazing views, tight and loose curves, lot of elevation movement, and hardly any traffic (at least on weekdays). In Robbinsville, there is Lynn's Diner...great salad bar, and the food off the menu was spectacular...very nice friendly people. If in Tellico Plains, stop at Nut'N'Fancy. You feel like your in a Maine beachfront restaurant, and the food is superb as well. The blog link in my sig has information about both places, as well as the road.
How do you plan to ride from Kansas City to Louisville? If you are looking for a way across southern Indiana, let me know and I can help you with some suggestions.
If you go into Gatlinburg while in the Smokeys there is a biker friendly place called Smoky's Sports Pub and Grub on the main drag that has a philly cheese sandwich to die for.
Since we were in the neighborhood, we did indeed plan on running the dragon, but from what I can tell there are a couple of other options in the area as well.. Im liking the sound of this Skyway Run...certainly going to load that into the trip plan! Thanks for the heads up!!
Im not a fan of interstate riding...you blast past to many things that are better off seen from the highways! If you have any favorite trip tickets that you like and will keep us moving, Im open to suggestion!
Little north from your posted route but if you make it I'd suggest the Flight 93 memorial in Shanksville PA. Here is a site with directions http://www.nps.gov/flni/planyourvisit/directions.htm
We hit this one our way to rolling thunder this year. The memorial isnt complete yet but there is a observation area. 3.5 hours from DC I believe.
Thanks for the route Mike...not sure if I will make it this year, but my goal for next years ride is to hit the North East and this would fit perfectly into that run!! Stow it away for future trip tickets! Looks to be an awesome run! Great way to honor those that took the bull by the horns on Flight 93 as well!!! "LETS ROLL"!
I-66 West out of DC TO Front Royal Va Skyline drive 109 miles through the Shenandoa National Park, right where that ends the Blue Ridge Parkway begins, over 500 miles of mountain tope riding down along the river through mmany tunnels where this ends Smokey Mountain National park begins, around the cornner is the Dragon and the Cherakola Skyway, that ought to keep you busy for a few days.
I was in Robbinsville 3 weeks ago...Rode the Dragon, the skyway and the moonshiner 28...Good loop to do is the skyway to Telico plains then 360 north then 129 to the dragon then 28 south....I go at least twice a year, more if i can...the first year i got my Electra glide i think we rode to the NC, VA or WV mountains like 10 times in the year...we even did 4 day trips....
