I rode down there in late June....not a good idea since it was very hot. It would be a nice ride in the fall. Some great riding in the hill country down there.
make that late fall. places to stay: gage hotel in marathon, chisos mtn. lodge in big bend, indian lodge at fort davis state park. good ride from alpine to ft. davis, there is a great loop ride at fort davis, river road from presidio to terlingua, 118 from terlingua to alpine. be sure to see the muesum of the big bend in alpine, mcdonald observatory, try the marfa lites, spend a day riding in big bend.
have lived in south texas all my life(63 years) and feel very safe out in big bend country. it is a hot and rugged part of the state--great to visit but would hate to live out there. there are plenty of gas stations out there, but don't wait for your low fuel lite to come on before looking for gas.
Ride up to the McDonald Observatory from Fort Davis up Hwy 118. Then, after touring the Observatory, ride Hwy 166. It will take you back to Hwy 17. Its a beautiful high country route. Be very watchful of herds of deer and mountain sheep crossing the highway. There are border entries on northbound direction of both highways coming out of the Big Bend. We were not delayed for very long. I will say, the border officers mean business and do not care for smart *** remarks or trying to joke with them. Don't ask me how I know.

Thanks for the tip, theres 3 or 4 of us going, myself & another friend are notorious smartasses.
All great advice. Have been to Big Bend 3 times. Try to camp at Santa Elena Canyon. Last trip I made there I was the only one in the camp ground. It was great. Ran around naked. Chisos Basin is the main part of the park. Blew a primary belt back in 1988 coming down out of the Basin.
On a side note my Dad helped build Big Bend State Park and Ft. Davis Park in the 1930s with the Civilian Conservation Corp.
