Map this route out. Covers all the way and you can stop for the night where you want. I have ridden all routes to Reno from the Bay Area and Highway 4 is by far the best. Occasionally the pass is still closed in May but you can check prior to leaving and detour to Highway 88 from Stockton. Great burger place in Markleville just prior to Highway 89 on Highway 4.
Vegas to Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara to San Simeon
San Simeon to Half Moon Bay
Half Moon Bay through Pacifica to SF
SF to Stockton via Highway 580
Highway 4 to Angels Camp
Angels Camp to Highway 89 via Highway 4
89 to Reno via Carson City
Reno to Tenopah and then to Vegas
Its 1439 miles and can easily be done in 5 days even with the coast route. 88 is faster than 4 if you need to make up time and you can cut over to 101 to get up the coast faster. It will cut out time but you will sacrifice scenery. This will take you up the coast, over the mountains and through the woods.

Disregard just saw you said in may. I have driven the hwy 95 route a few times some cool looking run down towns out there. There is an elks lodge in one of the larger.towns don't remember the name but I think it was.one where Wyatt earps brother is buried
Lots.of history on.that area
Should be doable as long as you don't stop for to long at any one place. The weather might play a part that time of year. I went through Tahoe in June once and there was still snow on the ground.

See that's what my plan is. Not to stop too long in one place. Not go say to Santa Cruz and stay a day or two. Its about the ride. Stop when I want check out local scenery. Or what ever. If I hit snow so be it the route is a general idea. If I have to go inland. Im fine with that. And I hear you. I went up donner summit in june one time and there was snow everywhere
