Southern Circle
I am planning a June 2012 trip starting in Chatanooga, then to Nashville, then down the Natchez Trace, over to Memphis, back to the Trace through Tupelo, Jackson and on to Natchez. Then down to Baton Rouge, New Orleans and then along the Gulf through to Panama City Beach and then back up to Franklin, NC. All secondary scenic roads, no interstates. It looks to be about 2000 miles total and I have three weeks to travel. Please offer any suggestions along this route, thing to see, places to see, roads to take etc. Thanks.
Lots of places on the Trace to stop and see. If you like the Civil War thing, run over to Vicksburg, MS and tour the battlefield. Around Lorman, MS on Hwy 61 is the Old Country Store where you can get a good lunch. I have never had lunch there but poeple say it is good. In the same area is the "Windsor Ruins" an old antebellum home that burned. You can google it for directions. It is about 10 miles off the trace.
Cafe Du Monde for coffee & beneits - I will second that. They are good.
You can hit Hwy 90 out of NO going east. It goes through some marsh, then just a few highway miles, then you hit the MS Gulf Coast. Nice ride, Casinos. Once you cross the bridge into Ocean Springs, I would hit the interstate. "The Shed BBQ and Blues Joint" is at Ocean Springs, pretty good food.
You can get off the interstate and go to Dauphine Island, AL then catch the ferry over to Gulf Shores, AL. Old forts there to tour.
Stop at FloraBama, on the AL/FL line, and drink a beer. Pretty hot spot at night with some good bands.
Pretty long ride from there to get back to the water at Pensacola.
