Default road trips?

So I'm planning on taking off in the spring for a week long trip by myself to see America. Can you enlighten me as to what to bring as far as tools or phone numbers in case of breakdown or other? It sounds foolish but is there a master list like AAA for flats or flatbeds to haul you and your bike to the nearsest town for repair or whatever? In a car it's different than your bike especially if your're planning country road trip no?

Are you a H.O.G. member? If not, you may want to consider it. If you are a HOG member, on the back of your HOG card is a 1-800-443-5896 number to call 24/7 for road side assistance. I always have my HOG card with me and 2 credit cards (put 2nd credit card someplace other than wallet in case wallet gets lost/stolen), plus a couple hundred dollars road cash.

Some other basics:

- cell phone and charger
- flashlight
- 2nd pair of shoes for those non-riding times (pair of tennis shoes feel pretty good after riding all day in motorcycle boots/shoes)
- Rain gear is a must!
- small tool set
- road atlas
- google maps on your phone (if your phone can support that)
- helmet (a requirement in many states)

That's all my brain is coming up with right now. Of course, enough clothes to get down the road for 7 days of travel.

Have fun on your road trip.

The only reason I'm still in HOG is for the towing and Touring Handbook that shows dealership locations and info. I've had to actually use the towing once for a friend w/flat rear a few years ago and all I did was call the 800 number and wait. The bike was left at the dealership and my friend at the Holiday Inn in Souix City. The next day went to the dealership after bfast and the bike was fixed. As far as tools go, get a basic toolkit, add some wire/zipties/and electrical/duct tape. I carry a tire repair kit now that I've got tubeless tires along with a small halon fire extingusher. And don't forget a basic first aid kit.

HERE is a simple checklist you can use.

Here are some tool kits others have used. YMMV

HERE and HERE

Check in to some kind of insurance like Road America that HOG offers, its inexpensive and I've used it with success. They will come and pick you and the bike up and take you to the nearest dealership and with certain levels cover hotel, car rental etc...

Just point your wheel and go, enjoy the road. Harley's are pretty trouble free.

I assume you are using the phrase "to see America" and a week long trip as a loose statement. Go to www.touringdepot.com much good info there from experianced riders, ck out all the links.

I called my insurance company (Geico) to see just what my "full coverage" entails. Turns out they also provide roadside assistance. The only difference I could tell is that their towing radius is 75 miles compared to 100 miles for the HOG program. So, you may call your insurance and see what coverage you got.

Default long roads

Thanks for the info on pretrip planning and roadside asistance. See america on my bike is just a dream but you have to start somewhere. I have to look in HOGS membership since it may be a tripsaver in the long rum.

I offen pack my old worn out Tee shirts, shorts and socks. Use them for checking oil and cleaning bugs at the end of the day, then toss 'em. Replace the tees with new ones from cool places I visit. Yeah, the Hog or AMA towing service numbers are good to have.

Been solo touring for 45 years. Don't worry, be happy. Don't try to string together 5 or 7 or 10 high mileage days. One or two is enough. Think of it as a training run. If you have loud pipes put the stock back on. The sound wears you out and attracks un-needed attention. So do the stupid chrome **** helmets. I know the poser/pirate look is popular among the Harley boys but low key is the best way to travel.

Take a flat tire repair kit. I've only needed it once. Rain gear, extra pair of glasses or contacts. Make reservations. Charger for your phone, and extra scivies. Have fun.
