I'm going to be heading from Flagstaff, AZ to San Diego in late May, riding Rte. 66 through Oatman. My question is how best to proceed from there:
1. Down to Lake Havasu City overnight (and then where?), or
2. Up to Needles overnight?
If I go through Needles, I would probably take Rte. 66 as far as Anboy, then head south toward Twentynine Palms. Is Joshua Tree NP worth the trip? Should I ride down the west side of the Salton Sea and then take CA 78 west?
I would stay in Laughlin, NV. The rooms at the casinos will be really cheap, especially on week nights. We are staying at the Colorado Belle on April 25 for 26.00.
I would also take in Joshua Tree, as I have never been there. Once you get to Amboy, there is really not that much to see on Rt. 66.
Second Laughlin, I stayed at the Pioneer and week days it's 25 a night and it's like a motel you can usually get a room and park your bike right in front of the door to your room, also an all you can eat breakfast for like 8 bucks. Went twice last month no problems, it's not fancy though.
I agree with staying in Laughlin. Nice casino motels with a great view of the river. Good eats too. If you like a buffet try the Aquarius.
Stay with the 66 into Amboy and go through Joshua Tree after you get through 29 Palms.
Take the 10 freeway into Indio and take the 111 to the 74. Great lookout towards the top to take pics of Palm Springs. Look for the ped crossing sign after the passing lane ends and stop on the left side lookout.
Take the 371 through Anza and when that ends take the 79 to Santa Ysabel.
Now you've got a choice of which way to go. Make a left and go into Julian and catch the 79 to the Sunrise Hiway. You'll end up on the 8 which will take you into San Diego.
Or make a right on the 78 and head down to Ramona. Stay on that and you'll find yourself on the 67 heading down to El Cajon and the 8 which again will get you to San Diego. Both are good rides but the Sunrise Hiway is better. There's a couple of good turnouts that will show you the desert below which are nice Kodak moments.
Thanks for the detailed route suggestions. Thanks also to everyone who suggested Laughlin. I've stayed often in Las Vegas, but I've never been to Laughlin, and I don't know why I didn't think of adding it to this trip.
IMO the section of Rt 66 between Oatman thru Kingman and on thru to Seligman is one of the best sections of Rt 66 left. If you're going to Flagstaff take the extra time and ride it, you won't be disappointed.
